TeachingI have spent nearly all of my adult life teaching. I have facilitated learning in a variety of settings, including traditional university classrooms, online courses, public middle and high schools, social service agencies catering to homeless youth, outdoor education programs, and community-based settings that bring people with a wide variety of educational backgrounds together. In all of these venues, I draw on Paolo Freire’s popular education learning model to cultivate a student-centered, experiential learning environment. In Freire’s framework, learners first reflect on and activate the knowledge they already possess, which has been acquired through a lifetime of formal and informal experiences. They build on this prior knowledge to ask questions about a given topic, pursuing additional learning in real-world context to deepen understanding. This refined understanding, in turn, contributes to a course of carefully facilitated action, often in support of grassroots organizations, and to new cycles of learning.
